U.S. facing pressure to lift softwood lumber duty

Thanks to the high demand for housing and other wood products, and tight supply of lumber, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai is under pressure from homebuilders and lawmakers to remove the softwood lumber duty on Canadian lumber.

According to CTV News, Republican lawmakers have asked Tai to eliminate the duty on Canadian softwood lumber imports. But, Tai claims that Canada is not interested in engaging in negotiations and coming to a new lumber quota arrangement.

However, Youmy Han, a spokeswoman for Canada’s trade ministry, told CTV News that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has brought up the issue with President Biden and believes a negotiated agreement is possible.
